CloudConvert is a well-run service. Its security page says files are kept only for the conversion and then deleted, and the company publishes an audited security certification. The search for a "local" alternative usually comes from somewhere else: large videos take time to upload, the free plan caps you at 10 credits a day and 5 minutes of processing per file, and some files simply shouldn't leave your PC. Santra does its conversions on your own processor.

Why you might stay with CloudConvert
- You need an unusual format. Its 212 formats cover far more than Santra's list.
- You're a developer: its API lets apps and automated workflows convert files.
- You use several kinds of computers, or a phone. A browser is enough.
Why you might prefer Santra
- Big videos. Nothing has to be uploaded or downloaded again, and there's no per-file time limit. Changing MKV or MOV to MP4 is often a straight copy that takes seconds.
- Batches. Select 200 photos, drag once and drop on JPG; there are no daily credits to count.
- Privacy. Files never leave your PC.
- Paying once. US$19 for Santra Pro, no credits to top up and no subscription.
How to move your everyday conversions
- Install Santra on Windows 10 or 11.
- Drag the file (or many of the same kind) and tap Shift.
- Drop on the format you want. Santra saves the new file beside the original and never overwrites anything.
Popular jobs: HEIC to JPG, WebP to PNG, MKV to MP4, MP4 to MP3 and Word to PDF.
A word on the details
CloudConvert's prices, limits and data handling come from its own pricing and security pages, checked on 22 October 2026. Prices move with the number of credits you pick, so the figures above are the starting points shown there.
